Energy and the Environment Action Team

ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT MISSION STATEMENT:

Sault Ste. Marie will be recognized as a leader in Environmental Sustainability and Alternative Energy that has a superior quality-of-life based on natural environment and excellent air, soil, and water quality. 

SCOPE:

The committee will function as a study/recommend team that will engage with residents, businesses, utilities, environmental organizations and related stakeholders to recommend to the Community Development Roundtable areas of opportunity to advance the development of the Energy and Environment sector.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

Initial questions for the Energy and the Environment working committee to address include:

  • What approach could the community take to leverage its current position and grow the alternative energy sector and take advantage of new energy technology opportunities? 
  • What should our community’s energy/greenhouse gas emission plan include – what are the goals and how is it funded in order to secure the plan’s success?
  • Is there an opportunity to capitalize on change in the recycling industry to develop business opportunities in SSM?
  • How can SSM develop a Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Northern Agriculture?

PRIORITIES:

1. Develop an urban forestry plan with specific focus on identifying goals for tree cover in the community, both for aesthetic and environmental purposes.
2. Commisison an Energy & Environment Strategy Report, with a focus on mapping our energy and environmental industry assets and identifying opportunities for growth
    of existing or attraction of new assets to the community.
3. Develop a St. Mary's water trail, with the focus on promoting recreational, conservation and education related to the local watershed.
