Frequently Asked Questions about FutureSSM

What is FutureSSM?

  • FutureSSM is a forward-thinking division of the Community Economic Development and Enterprise Services (CDES) Department at the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
  • FutureSSM is implementing our community's collective vision to build a great city where people want to live, visit and do business. FutureSSM's team is working alongside community members to fulfill and build upon the recommendations laid out in the Community Adjustment Committee Report, A Common Cause and New Direction for Sault Ste. Marie.

How is this project funded?

FutureSSM is funded by three levels of government:

  • Municipal - The Corporation of the City of Sault Ste. Marie contributed $1.5 million
  • Provincial - Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) contributed $1.4 million
  • Federal - FedNor contributed $1.1 million

How long is the FutureSSM project?

  • FutureSSM is a three year funded project (2018 - 2021) whose vision will continue to be carried out by Community Development and Enterprise Services long after the project has ended.

How is FutureSSM different from 'Shape the Sault'?

  • Shape the Sault is the city of Sault Ste. Marie Planning Division's project to create a new Official Plan (OP). The OP is a legal document containing a community's goals, objectives and policies to manage and direct land use planning and development over a 20 year horizon.
  • Both Shape the  Sault and FutureSSM are plans for the city's future based upon the vison and ideas of the residents of Sault Ste. Marie. The focus of FutureSSM is on community action items that address our economic growth and diversification, social equity, cultural vitality, and environmental sustainability. The focus of Shape the Sault is long term policies that are intended to guide future decisions on land use, development and public infrastructure.

How is FutureSSM different from the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation?

  • FutureSSM is taking a holistic approach to community development that goes beyond economic development to include cultural vitality, social equity and environmental sustainability. The FutureSSM team is working in close collaboration with the EDC (which includes Tourism SSM), the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre and other community partners to advance our community's collective vision.

How is FutureSSM different from past community development projects?

  • CDES - The establishment of the Community Development Department is one of the most tangible changes the City has made in the time that previous studies/groups were initiated. The CDES provides FutureSSM with a group that can continue to carry out the vision of FutureSSM long after the project has ended.
  • Project Staffing & Resources - The project is exceptionally well staffed and funded relative to past efforts. There are 6 full-time staff members who are enthusiastic, innovative and committed to our City's future.
  • Holistic approach - FutureSSM is taking a four pillar approach to community development that goes beyond economic development to include cultural vitality, environmental sustainability and social equity.
  • FutureSSM is focused on implementation.
  • No more silos - FutureSSM has made it a priority to work in collaboration with new and existing initiatives, institutions, industries and organizations to move the project and city forward.

What are the Action Teams?

  • Action teams represent the community, and act as formal 'committees' of FutureSSM that identify priorities within each sector and work with staff and other partners to execute those priorities. The leads of the Action Teams are members of the Community Development Roundtable to ensure silos are broken down and communication takes place across the different pillars.
